There are many ways in which we can be peacemakers. One way
is to tolerate the opinions and desires of others. Many quarrels result
from arguments in which men become angry with the opinions others
express. Many religious wars have arisen because one party would
5
not tolerate the beliefs of others. Every man has a right to his opinion.
However foolish an opinion may seem, we should allow it to be
expressed, and should not take offense because others do not think
as we do.
Quarrels arise because our desires conflict with those of others.
10
At home two children sometimes desire the same thing, and neither
will give way to the other. We should be willing to give in to many of
the desires of others. Unselfishness promotes peace. If all of us are
willing to let others have their fair share of things, and their own place
in games at home and at school, we can live in peace.

Monthly mood swings are not just women’s business: the latest
research shows that the boys are also prone to the monthly blues. A
study by psychologists from England’s University of Derby suggests
that men may experience cyclical symptoms similar to, or __1__,
5
those suffered by pre-menstrual women. Symptoms of this “Periodic
male tension” or PMT __2__ pain, loss of concentration, behavioral
changes, physical reactions, negative feelings and loss of arousal.
The research team asked 100 men and women about symptoms
usually related to the menstrual cycle. They were stunned __3__ the
10
men reported they suffered from similar symptoms more severely
than the women. Previous studies suggest the male symptoms could
be caused by internal biorhythms: the theory is that we all experience
cyclical changes in our moods but, __4__, women also menstruate
cyclically. Another hypothesis is that men have a lower pain threshold
15
than women and are making a fuss about nothing.

People in general have always assumed that the temperature of
a leaf should be in sync with the temperature of the surrounding air.
However, it’s amazing that burning temperatures seldom turn the
leaves on the tree into flames. According to a study published in a
5
famous science journal, Nature, this can be accounted for by the fact
that as a result of evolution, leaves tend to maintain at a
comfortable, climate-conditioned 21 degrees Celsius. For instance,
plants from the subtropics, say Kaohsiung, have evolved
mechanisms to adjust the temperature of their leaves by angling
10
themselves away from the sun. On the other hand, plants in mountain
areas (e.g., Mountain Jade), where the weather is often chilly, have
developed ways to “heat” their leaves by putting out more leaves per
branch to huddle for warmth. After all, what other option does a plant
have in an unpleasant environment? It cannot just migrate to a cooler
15
place.
